The best way to prevent dental disease is to receive regular, professional dental care. You can start by visiting a family dentist or professional dental hygienist at Sherwood Park’s Emerald Hills Dental Centre. We offer teeth cleaning services along with oral exams, diagnostics, radiography, oral hygiene counselling, and preventative treatments using fluoride and sealants.
The Canadian Dental Association recommends Canadians visit the dentist for a routine cleaning every six months. Some patients may need more frequent care depending on the health of their teeth. Besides examining your teeth to catch any disorders in their early stage, your Sherwood Park dental hygienist and dentist at Emerald Hills Dental Centre can also advise you on how to take care of your teeth at home.

Keep us Informed
Dr. Jaffer has been my dentist for almost 30 years and I hope she does not retire anytime soon as I don’t know if I would find a dentist that I enjoy seeing so much. In all these years, I have never ever felt a needle that she has given me whether it be for basic dental work, a root canal or my dental implant. (I will not allow anyone else to give me needles so Dr. Jaffer made a special trip to the office to freeze my jaw for my implant). As she is working on your teeth, she explains everything so you know exactly what to expect – there are no surprises. If something doesn’t turn out the way it should, she will make it right. Dr. Jaffer explains all the options available to you, the potential costs and the treatment timeframes required, so you are very well-informed when you are ready to make a decision. The flexible evening hours have been instrumental in me not having to miss work and numerous times the office has closed late dealing with emergency work I’ve had to get done. Their office is so sanitary I usually put my carry bag and purse on the floor – I would not do that in any other environment.

If you brush every day and never get cavities, you may believe you don’t need to see a dentist. However, things like plaque, tartar, and cavities may not be visible to you, and hard substances like tartar can only be removed using the professional tools and expertise of a trained dental hygienist. If you brush diligently and have healthy teeth, well done! But that doesn’t mean you are exempt from risk of dental disease. Visit us regularly for professional cleaning and polishing.
For damaged or missing teeth, we offer restorative treatments such as:
Bridges replace one missing tooth or multiple. They extend – or “bridge” – over an area with missing teeth and are held in place on either side either by existing natural teeth or tooth implants. Bridges need to be flossed and brushed daily, and with proper care, last about 5 to 10 years.
Crowns act as a covering or cap on teeth that have been damaged but not lost. Materials include metal, porcelain, composite, and porcelain fused with metal. Crowns usually last about 10 years if cared for properly, and look almost exactly like natural teeth.
Fillings can be used to cover up stains and chips. They are made of white composite resin, shaped, and hardened by a light in layers.
You want to greet the world with your most beautiful smile. We have ways to help you enhance it, such as:
There are numerous whitening products on the market today, from surface whitening products found in chewing gums and toothpastes to bleaching agents that can be applied using light and heat. We recommend consulting a professional dentist before undergoing teeth whitening procedures.
Composite fillings, also known as “plastic” or “white” fillings, are the same colour or can be matched to your current teeth colour. They can also be completed in one appointment. Your dentist will clean the decay out from the tooth in treatment and then apply layers of composite resin and cure with a light.
Veneers are thin shells that cover the outer surface of your teeth and give them a more polished, shinier, and whiter look and also strengthen the edges of the teeth. They can be constructed out of composite resin or porcelain and can take the same colour as the rest of your teeth.
Preventative Care: Fluoride & Sealants
Fluoride is a natural mineral found in soil, water, and certain foods, and has preventative properties that help teeth resist decay. In Canada, much of our public drinking water is supplemented by fluoride, and it is also found in toothpastes, gels, and varnishes.
Sealants are thin, protective coverings that can be applied to the chewing surfaces of molars to prevent cavities and decay. As children are more susceptible to cavities than adults, your dentist can apply sealants to your child’s teeth to help them avoid developing cavities. Both adults and children can get sealants, but the earlier you get them, the more effective they’ll be. Sealants are relatively easy, quick, and painless to apply.
As with all medical conditions, early detection is the key to successful treatment. At Emerald Hills Dental Centre, our clinic is fully digital, and this includes our digital x-rays. Digital X-rays are more accurate and less harmful than their traditional predecessors.
We also provide comprehensive oral examinations and treatment planning should we discover the beginnings of a disorder. Our dental hygienists and dentist will provide you with professional advice and guidance to best care for your teeth.
The staff at Emerald Hills Dental Centre are experienced with the unique needs of children and patients with dental anxiety.
Children’s dental care is called “pedodontics,” and regular, professional dental care from an early age is the best way for children to avoid more painful and more costly problems down the road. The Canadian Dental Association recommends children visit the dentist six months after the first eruption of their first tooth, or by their first birthday. However, if you suspect dental problems before this time, please consult a dentist as soon as you can.
For patients with serious dental anxiety, you too deserve to access the benefits of professional dental care. Dentists can use sedation techniques such as nitrous oxide, or “laughing gas,” that can numb pain and enhance relaxation. We offer sedation at our office. Make sure you discuss with your dentist your medical history, anxiety levels, and the procedure at hand before undergoing sedation.
